本品は頸部に段々と帯のついた口作りで、なだらかなヘ瓶子状の胴部をもつ、壺型の緑釉器です。

このように、様々な禅的教訓と共に描かれることも多い猿猴図ですが、本作品の猿には、教訓めいたものはないようです。おだやかな眼の日本猿が竹林でただたゆらう様が自在に描かれています。
